Comparing B2 First and C1 Advanced instead?
Different question, and it has its own answer: B2 First vs C1 Advanced covers choosing between two levels of the same Cambridge exam. This page is about choosing between Cambridge and IELTS.
Which is harder?
The honest answer is that the question is slightly malformed. IELTS has no pass mark — you get a band from 1 to 9 and the institution decides what it wants. C1 Advanced has a fixed threshold at 180, and below 160 you get nothing.
Roughly, a C1 Advanced pass sits in the same territory as an IELTS band around 7. What makes C1 Advanced feel harder is not the language level but the all-or-nothing structure: an off day at IELTS costs you half a band, whereas the same off day at C1 can cost you the certificate. What makes it feel easier is that you know exactly what you are aiming at, and you can prepare for a known target.

Format differences that actually matter
| C1 Advanced | IELTS | |
|---|---|---|
| Result | Grade A/B/C at a fixed level, or Level B2 below it | Band score 1–9, in half bands |
| Pass mark | 180 on the Cambridge English Scale | None — the institution sets the bar |
| Validity | Does not expire | Usually accepted within two years |
| Speaking | Paired, with another candidate, 15 minutes, four parts | One-to-one with an examiner, around 11–14 minutes |
| Writing | Two tasks of 220–260 words: a compulsory essay plus one of report, proposal, review, letter | Two tasks: a shorter data or letter task and an essay |
| Reading | Eight parts, including vocabulary and grammar tasks | Three passages, comprehension only |
The paired speaking test
This is the biggest experiential difference, and people feel strongly about it in both directions. At C1 Advanced you are assessed partly on how you interact with another candidate — inviting them in, disagreeing without ending the conversation. If that sounds like an advantage, it is. If the idea of your mark depending partly on a conversation with a stranger sounds unbearable, IELTS is one-to-one.
You are still assessed individually at C1, and examiners are trained for uneven pairs — but the format is genuinely different, not just a variation.
Grammar and vocabulary tested directly
C1 Advanced tests them explicitly, in Use of English. IELTS does not — it assesses them only through your reading, writing and speaking. If you are strong on structure and precision, C1 gives you somewhere to show it. If your strength is fluent communication rather than accuracy, IELTS plays to it.
Validity: the difference that outlasts the exam
Cambridge certificates do not have an expiry date. IELTS results are typically only accepted by institutions within two years of the test date — that is institutional policy rather than the result being cancelled, but it has the same practical effect.
If your plans are three years out, or you want something for a CV indefinitely, that difference is worth more than any comparison of difficulty. If you need a score for one application next spring, it does not matter at all.
Who accepts which
Both are very widely accepted, and the honest guidance is the same for each: check the specific institution’s requirement before you book anything. Acceptance policies vary and change, and a general statement about “most universities” is not something to plan a year of study around.
The pattern worth knowing: IELTS has deeper penetration in immigration contexts, particularly where a government body specifies the test. Cambridge qualifications are long established in European education and in employer settings, where a permanent certificate at a named CEFR level is easy to interpret. Many institutions accept both and publish a conversion.
A decision framework
- A named body has specified a test. Take that one. Everything else on this page is irrelevant.
- University admission, no test specified. Either works. C1 Advanced is often the more comfortable fit, because admissions requirements are frequently written in CEFR levels.
- Career, CV, no deadline. C1 Advanced — it does not expire, and “C1 Advanced” states a level in a way a band score does not.
- Migration or visa. Check the specific requirement first; these are the contexts most likely to name a particular test.
- Unsure of your level. IELTS returns a band whatever happens, which makes it lower-risk. At C1 Advanced you can still fall to a B2 certificate, but below 160 there is nothing.
If C1 Advanced is your answer
Start with a diagnostic rather than a schedule. C1 Advanced mock tests show you a component breakdown, which is the fastest way to find out how far off 180 you actually are. Then the C1 study plan covers what the months should contain.
