Four parts, 15 min per pair, taken with a partner and assessed by two examiners — one who talks to you and one who only listens and marks. It is worth 20 % of your C1 Advanced (CAE) result. Part 1 is a short interview, Part 2 is a long turn comparing pictures, Part 3 is a collaborative task with your partner, and Part 4 is a discussion that opens the Part 3 topic out.
The assessment is not a test of having interesting opinions. You are marked on grammatical resource, lexical resource, discourse management, pronunciation and interactive communication — and that last one is why Part 3 rewards responding to your partner rather than delivering a prepared speech alongside them.
Part 2 is the part that most rewards practice, because it is the least natural thing you will be asked to do: speak for a full minute, alone, comparing two pictures and answering a question about them, without being interrupted. Practising it once or twice is not enough to stop the minute feeling long.
Yes. Every speaking task here takes either a live transcript from your microphone or typed answers, and both get the same feedback — so you can work through the paper on a train or in a shared room and still finish the exercise.
You are assessed on your own performance, not compared to your partner, and examiners are trained for uneven pairs. What does affect your mark is interactive communication — inviting a quiet partner in, or not talking over a dominant one, is itself part of what is being scored.
