THE MONTH WITHOUT A SCREEN When I announced that I was going to spend a month without my smartphone, my friends reacted as though I had declared my intention to live in a cave. One asked, quite seriously, how I would survive. The truth is that I had grown uneasy about the device long before I found the courage to switch it off. I would reach for it before I was fully awake, and it was the last thing my hand closed around at night. It had become less a tool than a reflex. The first three days were genuinely unpleasant. I felt a low, persistent anxiety, a sense that something urgent was happening somewhere and I was missing it. My hand kept drifting to my empty pocket. I had not expected the withdrawal to be so physical. What I had airily dismissed as a mild habit revealed itself, rather humiliatingly, as something closer to a dependency. Then, gradually, the fog began to lift. I noticed that I was reading actual books again and, more surprisingly, finishing them. Conversations lasted longer, because neither I nor the person I was with was glancing down every few minutes. I got lost twice, having to ask strangers for directions, and both times the small exchange left me oddly cheered. I had forgotten how many tiny human interactions the phone had quietly replaced. I would love to report that I emerged transformed, a serene creature immune to the pull of technology. I did not. When the month ended, I turned the phone back on within the hour, and the familiar torrent of notifications felt, if I am honest, rather comforting. Old habits reasserted themselves with depressing speed, and within a week I was once again checking the thing at traffic lights. And yet something had shifted, if only slightly. I now keep the phone in a drawer during meals, and I no longer take it to bed. These are modest victories, and I am under no illusion that I have mastered the device rather than the other way around. But the experiment taught me one thing worth knowing: the phone is not, as I had told myself, indispensable. The world did not end when I put it down. That knowledge, small as it is, has changed how I use it. If anyone asks whether they should try the same thing, I hesitate. A month is a long time, and I would not pretend it was easy or that the effects were lasting. But I would gently point out that if the mere thought of switching off your phone fills you with dread, that reaction is itself worth pausing over. It may be telling you something you would rather not hear.
